Your journey begins with pick-up in El Calafate, followed by a scenic 70 km drive to “Bajo de las Sombras” Port, located within Los Glaciares National Park. Along the way, your guides will share engaging insights into the region’s history, landscapes, and glacial formations, setting the stage for the experience ahead.

Upon arrival, you’ll board a boat to cross Lake Rico, enjoying unique views of the glacier’s imposing south face. After disembarking, professional mountain guides will welcome the group and lead you to a shelter overlooking the ice, where the adventure begins.

The trek starts along the lakeshore, offering the chance to witness ice calving events while learning basic glaciology concepts. At the glacier’s edge, participants are organized into small groups to receive crampons and helmets, ensuring a safe and personalized experience with one guide for every 10 travelers.

Once on the ice, you’ll receive safety instructions before stepping into a fascinating frozen landscape. After approximately one hour on the glacier, the route continues along the moraine and through the Patagonian forest, completing around three hours of hiking in total. Back at the shelter, you’ll be welcomed with hot drinks, a perfect way to relax before boarding the boat for the return journey.

The full excursion lasts approximately 10 hours, including transfers and a guided visit to the glacier walkways, offering additional panoramic viewpoints. Travelers arriving independently can complete the experience in about 4.5 hours from the port.

As this experience takes place in a dynamic natural environment, weather and ice conditions vary daily—making each departure a unique and memorable adventure. The excursion operates regularly and is only canceled when safety conditions cannot be guaranteed.

What should you bring?

  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing, including a jacket, trekking or sports shoes, gloves, a wool hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

  • Bring a backpack for personal belongings.

  • Carry your own food and drinks, as none are available during the excursion.

  • National Park tickets must be presented at the entrance and can be purchased online or paid in cash (Argentine pesos).
