On this day, the journey begins at 7:00 AM with a pickup from your hotel in Punta Arenas (urban area), setting out by land toward the King Penguin Natural Reserve. The route takes you to Punta Delgada, the narrowest part of the Strait of Magellan, where a short 30-minute ferry crossing leads to Bahía Azul, entering Tierra del Fuego. Along the way, there's a stop to explore Estancia San Gregorio, a historic sheep farm dating back to 1878 that still preserves some of its original facilities.

Once on the island, the tour continues to the town of Porvenir for a brief city tour and a stop for lunch, before continuing on to the reserve.

Here, you'll have the unique opportunity to spend approximately one hour observing the majestic king penguins, the second-largest penguin species in the world, along the designated trail.

After the observation, the return journey begins, crossing back via ferry from Bahía Azul to Punta Delgada and driving back to the mainland, arriving back at your hotel in Punta Arenas at approximately 10:00 PM.

Important considerations before booking

  • Very long day — from 7:00 AM to approximately 10:00 PM, with several hours of driving and two ferry crossings; not recommended for travelers who prefer a lighter schedule.

  • Ferry schedule and weather dependent — crossings at Punta Delgada–Bahía Azul can be affected by wind and sea conditions, which may adjust the day's timing.

  • Limited time with the penguins — observation at the reserve is approximately one hour, regulated to protect the colony.

  • Seasonal reserve — the King Penguin Reserve typically operates in the warmer months; confirm exact opening dates for your travel period.

This experience is perfect for travelers seeking a rare, well-organized encounter with king penguins in the wild — combining Patagonian history at Estancia San Gregorio, a stop in Porvenir, and one of the most unusual wildlife sightings in southern Chile.
