Glaciar Sur Aventura
Step beyond the classic viewpoints of Patagonia and venture into one of the most secluded corners of Los Glaciares National Park. This full-day expedition is designed for travelers who crave a more active and intimate encounter with nature, combining navigation and trekking through landscapes that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
.
Your journey begins in El Calafate, traveling toward the southern reaches of Lago Argentino. As you move away from the main routes, the scenery becomes increasingly remote, setting the tone for a day of true exploration. Upon reaching the Brazo Sur, you’ll board a small boat to navigate across these quiet waters, surrounded by dense forests and towering Andean peaks.
.
The first hike begins after disembarking, following a trail that winds through native woodland and gentle terrain. Along the way, you’ll gain elevated views over Lago Frías, a striking glacial lake known for its vivid green tones. The path gradually leads down to the shore, where a second short navigation takes you deeper into a rarely visited section of the park.
.
From here, the landscape opens into a broad glacial valley shaped by ancient ice flows. The terrain becomes more rugged and dramatic as you continue on foot, crossing natural features such as moraines, streams, and open plains. The highlight of the journey is reaching a remote natural amphitheater formed by multiple hanging glaciers, where ice and rock create an impressive and almost otherworldly setting.
.
There, surrounded by silence and vastness, you’ll pause to enjoy a boxed lunch while taking in the scale and raw beauty of this hidden environment. It’s a moment to disconnect and fully absorb the essence of Patagonia—far from crowds and deeply connected to nature.
.
After time to rest and explore the area, the return journey retraces the same route, combining trekking and boat navigation back to the starting point. You’ll arrive in El Calafate in the evening, completing a full day immersed in some of the most pristine landscapes in southern Patagonia.
.
With a total hiking distance of approximately 14 km (8.5 miles) over uneven terrain, this experience is best suited for active travelers with a moderate level of fitness. It’s an ideal choice for those looking to go beyond traditional excursions and discover a quieter, more adventurous side of Patagonia.
